Comedy Entertainment, Timing is Everything
A favorite joke among comedians goes like this:
COMEDIAN: You ask me what I do for a living. I’ll say, “I’m a comedian.” You ask, “What’s the most important thing about being a comedian?” Okay? Let’s try it.
(Comedian in italics.)
“What do you do for a living?” “I’m a comedian.” “What’s the most import…” “TIMING!”
And so it is with comedy entertainment at your company party.:
Timing is everything.
Here are a few tips regarding the scheduling of comedy entertainment during your function:
• Don’t schedule comedy during dinner. It’s impolite (and potentially messy) to laugh with your mouth full.
• Don’t schedule comedy too early. Let everyone socialize and unwind a bit first.
• Don’t schedule comedy after remembrances of employees and others that have passed or could not be present because of dire circumstances. After remembrances give away a few prizes or awards to lighten the mood before announcing and comedy act.
• Do schedule comedy before the big prizes have been given out. It will keep your people from leaving and possibly missing the best part of the evening.
• Do schedule comedy before the band or any other “big” entertainment. Comedy works best as a warm up for the band, not vice versa.
Follow these simple rules and your comedic entertainment will be much more successful and memorable.
