Hypnotist Show By the Light of the Silvery Bus

May 15, 2017

Sometimes things don't go as planned, so you have to roll with the punches.

Last Friday night I had a hypnosis show booked in Jackson, Mississippi. It was a post-graduation hypnosis show for a local private school. It was supposed to take place in a building on the grounds of the Jackson museum complex. Well, things didn't quite go as planned.

When I got to the venue at 11 p.m. or so (the show was scheduled for 11:30 p.m.) the tour bus carrying the new graduates and parent chaperones was in the driveway, facing the locked gates.

I pulled up and my contact told me they were waiting for the security guard to show up with the key to the gate. One of the parents jumped the fence to check out the venue building; the door was unlocked, the lights were on and the chairs and tables were set up. No security guard was found. Another parent called the police to find out if there was an emergency contact. Nope.  (I suppose we could have all jumped the fence but I'm guessing that if we did that, someone would have been notified and we'd all have been arrested.)

So, we did the show in the parking lot. The curb was the stage. There was no seating so the audience stood facing the "stage." There was also no sound system so I talked as loudly as I could. The "stage lights" were provided by the bus's driving lights. Surprisingly, everything went very well. We all (kids, parents, me and the bus driver) all had a great time.

Even when things don't go as planned, the show must go on!

(A note to prospective clients: Hire a pro, just in case.)
