On "Crushing It" or "Killing It"

Oct 19, 2015

Lately I've heard a lot of times from a lot of entertainers (mostly comedians, hypnotists and magicians) say they "crushed it" or "killed it" after their set. Usually these terms are used by either amateurs, open mic performers and/or people who have some sort of narcissistic personality disorder. My stock line when someone spouts these words of self-aggrandization is "No you didn't. You did what you were supposed to do."

For some reason some entertainers think that "crushing it" or "killing it" (whatever it means) is what they did. Nope. What they did was either do their job or not. There is no "crushing it" or "killing it," there is succeeding at making people laugh or cry or think or be amused or amazed or whatever the purpose is in the particular field of entertainment you chose. Conversely, there is no "bombing" either; there is only not doing your job successfully.

While every professional has their good days and not-so-good-days, you'll never hear them say they "crushed it" or "killed it" (unless maybe they're an exterminator). They're professionals and professionals do their jobs, and they strive (as entertainers should) for competency and consistency.

In the future, if you hear an entertainer say they "crushed it" or "killed it" know that they're probably an amateur and will, hopefully, when competency and consistency take hold, grow out of using those hackneyed phrases. And... what is the "It" they crushed, anyway?
