Comedy Hypnotist, Whatever That Means

Oct 14, 2015

A hypnotist colleague of mine recently posted a video on one of the Facebook hypnotist groups. The video was of a guy who bills himself as a "Comedy Hypnotist."

The first 33 minutes of this so-called comedy person were not only unfunny, but painfully hard to watch. There was no comedy, no laughs from the audience, just 33 minutes of a dry and boring pre-talk (what hypnotists call their explanation of hypnosis).

After the first 33 minutes the volunteers on stage became hypnotized and were suggested to do funny things. That's when the comedy started. But if someone calls themselves a "comedy" hypnotist shouldn't the comedy start sooner than that? I think it should, and if I had hired this particular performer for my event, I would have felt cheated.

So what's someone interested in hiring hypnotic entertainment to do? Well, you could hire a run-of-the-mill stage hypnotist, one who takes 33 minutes or so of pure boredom to get the show rolling. Or you could do your research and make sure the performer is funny before the hypnosis begins. How? Ask for their stand-up, sketch or improv comedy video. If they're funny, they'll have one.

But let me warn you, only a handful of hypnotists come from a comedy background, so you might have to dig deep to find gold.
