What Would be Funny About Watching People Sleep?

Nov 25, 2014

Many years ago, when I started my hypnosis act, I approached a comedy club. Like a lot of comedy clubs, this club was owned by people who'd have probably been better off owning a laundromat or a sandwich shop (wait, their food wasn't very good, let's stick with laundromat).

Anyway, when I approached them about doing my hypnosis show at their club (where I had done my stand-up act in the past) they asked, "What would be funny about watching people sleep?

I knew, at that moment, explaining a stage hypnosis act to people would be an uphill climb.

So this year (2014) has been very slow on the company holiday party front. I asked one of my agents (the one who usually gets me most of my work at this time of year) why the bookings were so light. He told me that he has a hard time explaining my act to client's who'd never seen it (even AFTER they've seen a video).

Of course the clients who took a leap of faith and booked me have left glowing reviews with this agent (and my other agents, too). And rebooking my show for the groups that have hired me in the past is painless and easy.

Booking new clients will be a process my agents and I will have to be better at. I believe I have the better mousetrap (a stage hypnosis show that's funny from start to finish).

Clients have come up to me before shows (many times) and said something like, "I don't think you'll get many volunteers from this group." Many times they've been visibly worried that they took the chance and hired me. However, after the show, the typical comment form the same client goes something like, "That was the funniest entertainment we've ever had at one of our events."

So I think it comes down to this: If potential clients reads (or watches if video) the testimonials left by similar clients who were once skeptical too, and are willing to take a leap of faith, they'll find out firsthand "what would be funny about watching people sleep."
